KARA WALKER
She was born on the 26th of November
in the year 1969 in California .her father used to be an artist, professer and
a minister. She went to Rhode School of design and Atlanta college of art in
1991.kara walker now works in new York. She works as a professor for fine art In
Columbia university.
Type of art:
Black cut paper silhouette.
From what I see, most of her murals are
about African women in the 70s...like how they were raped, murdered, punished
or being a slave to a rich American family. The murals do not have faces, which
I think it makes you concentrate more on the actions rather than the people. My
own opinion of making silhouette is so because it attracts our attention and
makes us think”what is this about?
What is the story behind this?” stereotype
“She is an American African. She explores race, sexuality, tourism,
violence and identity.”
The black paper cuts are not all at the
same level; this is because she tries to create a scene or a composition. She decides
what is on the background, what is on the foreground. So our eyes could flow
along the painting like a story. It connects us to the artist’s world.she wants us
to feel what she felt like or what was going through her mind when she cuts out
every piece of the black paper. She makes us feel like talking to her personally
and she is telling a story to us.
She also uses stereotype to create the silhouettes.
For example there was a woman topless wearing a skirt which looks like it has
been made from leaves. She has big mouth, short dreadlocks, big hips and back side.
Instantly I thought of slaves in the 60s and the 70s.ovioulsy most of the slave
have dark/black skin which the silhouette is black as well.
