Si Scott

Biography
Si Scott was born in 1977 and has been interested in art since he was young.
He is originally from Leads, England.
He was 16 when he left school and started BTEC in design and Design for 2 years at Leeds College of art (he is now a part time lecturer there) then to Buckinghamshire Chilterns University.
What made him popular?
He finished university and moved straight to be a full time artist and designer.
Si Scott worked for a couple of small design agencies.
He learnt about the industry and also about using a computer (for typography).
His work is unique, which personally I think that made him famous.
Whilst he was employed he starts his on his own little project.
He worked on his own ideas. His aim was to be ORIGINAL.
He got made redundant, but Scott did not cry to his dad or sit in his apartment all day.
He said it was “good for him as it pushed him more in order to succeed”
He designed for firms such as Vogue, Nike, Orange, UNICEF, BBC, Guiness, American Express and also for magazines.

What made him unique?
His style is a mixture of hand crafted and hand drawn art (Free hand). He understands what typeface he should use for different occasions. For example in wedding cards the fonts would be cursive (curly) for the sign of love. How love flows like water.
He only used his computer to piece things together.

My Work
In class while we were learning typography, we were shown his work to give us some ideas to make our own fonts of our name.
My First design was just my name with what looks like a knife out of the letters.
Then we were asked to design the fonts that could relate to us and to think about the Kerning (Space between letters), ascenders (above X height line), descenders (below X height line), serif(fonts with the extra bits eg.Times Algerian etc and last but not least the X height(is the distance between the baseline and the main body of the lower case letters).
I decided to change the fonts completely. It was more fun.
What I did was I made the letter N to be in swirls and the letter I to be a stick candy and in A the circle inside there I put a lollipop candy.
That was my second letterform. I photocopied it.
After that I developed the letterforms by adding curls and change the I by adding more curls similar to Si Scott’s work.

Quotes (Si Scott)
“I really like looking at design and thinking: that attention to detail must have taken absolutely ages.”

“…once you become complacent that’s pretty much it—you’ve got to push and challenge yourself or there’s no point.”

"My dad always said 'Why work for somebody else when you can work for yourself'. That really stuck in my mind and I think that little bit of advice has stuck with me throughout my life so far."

My Oppinion:
Si Scott is an amazing illustrator. He was different. He was brave with his designs and the use of lines. What I learnt from him was how he represents the clients with the typeface, which perfectly matches the theme, mood and the client. He was not afraid to illustrate over the x-height.the cursive line sometimes forms into a drawing of an animal e.g. a butterfly.
